THE DEATH OF THE MUSHAIRA

The sad decline of the mushaira as the public side of meaningful poetry is one of the most silent deaths in Indian literature. A mushaira today is an event marked by shallow entertainment, bad politics and populist rhetoric of nationalism and hatred. Is there no way to rediscover the mushaira when poetry hardly has any public presence except perhaps the new virtual platforms? This session has four leading Urdu poets debating the theme and reading their work.
